HBO announced today that the first Game of Thronesprequel to be Hong Kong Archivespicked up to pilot will take place during the Age of Heroes, a period thousands of years before the events of the current show.
While the Age of Heroes is a very long and mysterious period of Westerosi history, and although HBO hasn't said much more about what the story will be, it's not too early to speculate about which legendary heroes may turn up as characters on the show.
SEE ALSO: 'Game of Thrones' prequel will explore the White Walkers' OG beef with WesterosBran the Builder was the founder of House Stark. He's known as the builder because he's the guy who managed to build the Wall that separates Westeros from the Lands of Always Winter, which went up after the first war with the White Walkers, called The Long Night. Since the prequel promises to show the origins of the White Walkers, it's likely that Bran will be there to answer any audience questions about how the magical Wall was made in the first place.
Lann was the founder of House Lannister. The reason the Thrones-era Lannisters live in a castle called Casterly Rock is because Lann tricked the nobles of House Casterly out of their home and took it over for himself. His legends usually focus on how tricky, smart, and good at making money he was. So if he turns up in the prequels, he'll be a character to keep an eye on.
Back in the Age of Heroes, each of the seven kingdoms had their own king running the show. Durran was at one point the king of the Stormlands and is the ancestor of House Baratheon. (The Baratheons didn't get the Stormlands until after Aegon Targaryen showed up with his dragons a loooong time after the Age of Heroes.)
Not much is known about him, but he allegedly was married to a goddess, which is pretty neat.
While HBO did say that no characters from Game of Throneswould appear in the prequels, any White Walker threat has the potential to involve the Night King, who we know from Bran's time-hopping has been the same guy for thousands of years. It would be funny if the same blue dude just chills in the background of all of the prequel shows like "soon."
Bran's visits to the past also revealed that the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers after the Andal invasion, which is the event that sparked off the Age of Heroes in the first place. Depending on when in the Age the prequel takes place, there may be some Forest Children hanging out in Westeros – one of whom may be Bran's very flammable friend Leaf, who was probably a few thousand years old when she blew herself up.
If the prequel keeps up with Thrones' tradition of telling stories from both Westeros and Essos, the "Across the Narrow Sea" parts of the show may take place in the Valyrian Freehold, the birthplace of the Targaryens.
In Game of Thrones,Valyria is gone because a mysterious event called the Doom destroyed the city, but it was in its heydey during the Age of Heroes. At the height of its power, Valyria was ruled by a council of dragonlords (the Targaryens were one of them), so any Valyrian plotline will have to include everyone's favorite flying lizard boys.
