The song, whose title means "slowly" in Spanish, took over Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's "See You Again", which only made it its way to the number one spot last month, after overtaking Psy's "Gangnam Style", which formerly held the position for over four years.
"See You Again" was released in 2015, which means it took Despacito only seven months to beat a song which spent two years making its way up.
It's also worth noting that this version of "Despacito" is in fact, not the Justin Bieber remix of the song -- which doesn't even have its own MV.
"Despacito" is also the first Spanish-language song to make its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 since the Macarena in 1996.
"Thank you YouTube for Despacito's success, I recognise the influence that the platform has," Daddy Yankee said in a Billboard video on Instagram.

"Breaking the record is overwhelming, and I’m happy to keep [inspiring] others to do the same."
"Despacito" became the most-streamed song of all time in June with 4.6 billion streams globally.
So if you're not a fan of the song -- too bad, it looks like it's not going away anytime soon.
