We're months away from CBS's return to the final frontier,Watch I Did It For You Online but the network revealed a first look at Star Trek: Discoveryat the network's television upfront Wednesday.
SEE ALSO: Chris Pine channels William Shatner for classic 'Star Trek' skit on 'SNL'The photo features Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou and The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham -- a perfect illustration of the show's commitment to diversity.
Discoveryexecutive producer Bryan Fuller (who has since stepped down as showrunner to focus on other projects) emphasized that he wanted the new series to center around a woman of color as lead, and the show will also be the first Star TrekTV series to feature an openly gay character.
Georgiou and Burnham can be seen exploring a strange new world that almost demands a Tatooine joke, but who would sink so low?
As Burnham, Martin-Green has a communicator and what Entertainment Weeklynotes might be a tricorder like the ones Kirk and Spock had in the original Star Trek series -- which makes sense, since Discoveryis set about a decade before the crew of the Enterprise embarked on the infamous five-year mission that started it all.
Star Trek: Discoveryairs on CBS later this year, with a premiere date yet to be announced.
