Ahead of tomorrow's release of the final seasonst anal sex videoNetflix,Orange is the New Blackis partnering with GoFundMe to raise money for critical issues explored on the show.
The Poussey Washington Fund (named for Samira Wiley's beloved character on the show) will support eight pre-existing non-profits that focus on issues like criminal justice and policy reform, immigrants’ rights, and mass incarceration.
The fund doesn't just take inspiration from the show. It's also an interactive part of the final series (don't worry, this isn't a spoiler). At the end of the final episode, viewers will be directed to donate through the campaign. There's also a text-to-donate option in which U.S. viewers can contribute by texting 41411.
The fund begins as a fictional storyline in the final season of Orange is the New Black. Jenji Kohan, creator and writer, and Tara Herrman, executive producer, realized they could take the issues off the show and into the real world to make a tangible impact.
“The Poussey Washington Fund gives Orange is the New Blackfans and others the opportunity to help women who are not unlike Poussey, Red, Taystee, Maria, Daya and other characters from the show,” said Piper Kerman, author of “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison,” the memoir that the series is based on. “As we say goodbye to Orange is the New Black, we should also say goodbye to a criminal justice system that has unfairly and unnecessarily destroyed too many lives.”
The eight groups the Poussey Washington Fund will benefit are: A New Way of Life: Reentry Project, Anti-Recidivism Coalition, College & Community Fellowship, Freedom for Immigrants, Immigrant Defenders Law Center, The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Woman and Girls, unPrison Project, and Women’s Prison Association.
Fans don't have to binge the last season to contribute to the fund (but if they want to, we support that decision). To donate and learn more about the eight organizations, click here.
