【Watch Woman Living in A Motel Room Online】

LOS ANGELES -- "You are Watch Woman Living in A Motel Room Onlineour target audience!"

That's what Erin Darke, who stars in Amazon's new journalism drama Good Girls Revolt, told me during our phone interview when I said that the show spoke to me and other badass female journalists out there.

The show, written by former journalist Dana Calvo, is based on a book by Lynn Povich which follows the landmark case in which 46 female staffers sued Newsweekfor discrimination.

It does feature characters based on historical figures including writer-filmmaker Nora Ephron (Grace Gummer) and ACLU lawyer Eleanor Holmes Norton (Joy Bryant). But the three leading ladies -- Darke, Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect) and Genevieve Angelson (House of Lies) -- play fictionalized researchers at a magazine called News of the Week.

It's generated mixed reviews overall, but tons of positive feedback from female journalists.

After all, the 10-episode series -- though set in 1969 -- couldn't have come at a better time in 2016, a year in which Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has openly hated on both women and journalists.

That irony is not lost on the cast members, who spent four months filming the season.

"I just lived in the skin of a person who experienced sexism every day," Darke said. "Coming out of that and seeing what’s happening with this election, I just know how important it it is to notgo back there. We cannot elect a 1969 misogynist for president."

Angelson echoed that sentiment.

"It isn't important to tell these stories ESPECIALLY given the political climate, it's important to [just] tell these stories," she said in an email interview with Mashable. "That importance, the imperative for human rights and equality and women's need for the dignity of work and opportunity and men's feeling threatened by that, creates this political climate."

To prepare, as expected the actors said they read the book and did a lot of research.

"I smoked a lot of weed and had a lot of anonymous sex. No, I didn't, but now I really wish I had because it would make for much better interview stories," Angelson joked. "I immersed myself in the pop culture of the period with Patti's [my character's] eyes. And then I gave myself permission to be a woman who comports herself with permission - permission to be sexy, and outspoken, and rebellious, and charming and adorable."

Darke said she also watched CNN's docu-series on the '60s and '70s.

Though the similarities between Mad Men and Good Girls Revolt are evident, watching the popular AMC show wasn't part of the show prep.

"The central voice of Mad Menwas Don Draper, a very masculine and pretty messed up voice," Darke said. "And one of the things I love about thisshow is it’s not only a feminine voice, it’s intelligent, compassionate, feminist voice."

In addition to being politically relevant, many female reporters have commented on the series helping them realize how lucky they are to be living "the dream," one that seemed far off in the Mad Men era.

"As the series shows, at the time of the lawsuit, a woman could have been the best writer in the building, but would still be relegated to helping a man get another byline," Bustlewriter Martha Sorren wrote in a recent story. "Those Newsweekwomen fought so that one day I could have my dream career — the one that I've wanted since I was 9 years old and wrote the first edition of The Sunday Sorren,a handwritten newspaper chronicling the events of my house for my parents."

Basically, as a recent Deciderarticle put it, the show is "truly feminist AF."
