The shootout took place in Linden, New Jersey after a bar owner recognized Rahami, who was sleeping in the doorway to the bar. Two police officers suffered injuries.
During a Monday afternoon press conference, FBI special agent William Sweeney said Rahami was "directly linked" to the explosive devices found in New York City and Seaside Park, New Jersey.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio added, "We have every reason to believe this was an act of terror," but also said that, so far, there are no indications that other suspects were involved with the bombings.
On Monday afternoon, Rahami was charged with five counts of attempted murder in relation to the shootout that led to his arrest.

Also reporting on the incident was an Instagram post by New York State Senator Marty Golden, which read: "Update from the NYPD: About an hour ago, the FBI took several individuals into custody on the Belt Parkway in the area underneath the Verrazano Bridge, with a possible connection to the bombing last night in Chelsea."

On Sunday, NYPD conducted a controlled detonation on the second device that was found on Saturday. It took place at a police facility in the Bronx on Sunday evening. Authorities have confirmed that the device has been rendered safe and that a forensic examination of the device will be conducted at the FBI Laboratory at Quantico, Virginia.
Agents have also searched an Uber driver's vehicle that was damaged in the Chelsea blast. The driver, M.D. Alam, had just picked up three passengers and was driving along 23rd Street when the explosion occurred, shattering the car's windows and leaving gaping holes in the rear passenger-side door.
The New York Timesreported on Sunday that both devices were filled with "fragmentation materials," or shrapnel, and both were "designed to create maximum chaos and fatalities."
In all, 29 people were injured in the bombing and all victims have been released from treatment at local hospitals.
Authorities in Elizabeth, New Jersey were investigating the "suspicious package" that halted NJ Transit and Amtrak trains. Mayor Chris Bollwage of Elizabeth, New Jersey told media outlets that a device containing explosives went off around 1 a.m. ET while being examined by a bomb squad robot.

The Mayor said the object, reported to be a backpack, contained up to five devices. "This was an explosive device," he said. "Based on the loudness, I think people could have been severely hurt or injured if they had been in the vicinity."
The device was found in a garbage can approx 300 feet from a busy pub in Elizabeth, according to NBC News.

While the investigation was ongoing late Sunday night, there's been no evidence that it's linked to either the NYC explosion or a pipe bomb that went off during a race in Seaside Park, New Jersey on Saturday morning.
