The Watch Ignite Vol. 3 OnlineNBA and 2K Games are launching their own esports league for the NBA 2K video game series and on Monday they unveiled the league's logo.
SEE ALSO: The Phoenix Suns were secretly replaced by robots. Here's the proof. The logo for the NBA 2K League is reminiscent of the NBA's own logo but instead of featuring a basketball player, it features the design of a basketball.
The vertical pill-shape of the logo and its red, white, and blue coloring speaks to the NBA's own logo, and the font of the league name below is used by 2K Games.
Along with the logo reveal, 2K Games released a video that digs into the design process.
The designer, Rodney Richardson of Rare Design, explains the thought process behind why the logo is reminiscent of a basketball rather than, like the NBA's logo, a player.
"It's not defined by sex, it's not male or female," he said in the video. "This league is open to any gamer that has the ability to go out there and earn their spot."
League members will be representing NBA teams, although the names of the teams may be slightly altered to distinguish between the original team and the esports team. The NBA 2K League's seasons will mirror typical NBA schedules with a regular season, bracketed playoffs, and a championship.
The names and logos of all 17 participating teams in the first season will be revealed throughout the week.
