There's a small but dedicated team of video games-loving Mashable writers on our entertainment team, and -- as it usually goes with E3 -- we've been chatting and guessing for weeks about what this year's show might bring.
Instead of bringing you a dry rundown of what we think might happen during each press conference, we thought it would be fun to share each team member's own hopes and dreams for E3 2018. Here they are, in no particular order.

My favorite kind of games are single-player third person RPGs with little to no gun combat and this year at E3 there are a surprising number of great-looking games that fit those criteria. I’m most excited about Spider-Manfor PS4 because I consider the Arkham games to be nearly perfect and Spider-Manlooks like the next natural evolution of the grapple-heavy FreeFlow combat system that Rocksteady pioneered with the Batman games. Also, it will be nice to swing around a city in the daytime for once.I’m also a huge Assassin’s Creed fan and was very hype at the Assassin’s Creed: Odysseyannouncement. Last year’s AC: Originstotally redirected the franchise towards the elements that make AC so great in the first place, like puzzles, historical tourism, and feeling like a badass when you jump off famous stuff. Ancient Greece is a great way to extrapolate and build on that formula. I know in my heart I’ll be able to launch my assassin off the Parthenon and that will honestly fulfill a lifelong dream.

Super Smash Bros. One of the greatest and most popular fighting game series of all time, Super Smash Bros., is coming back with a brand new entry on the Nintendo Switch. We’ll be getting an extended look at the new Smashat E3, probably a bigger look than any other game will be getting thanks to a invitational tournament that will begin streaming on June 12. Expect new fighters, new stages, new items, and some sweet, sweet Nintendo on Nintendo action.Pokémon (2019) for the SwitchThis one isn’t guaranteed but we may get some news about the main series Pokémon game coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2019. It was first announced at E3 2017 and so far all we know about it is that it will be the first main series Pokémon game on a home console. If they even just share some images or a title, that will be enough to get decades-long fans excited for the new game. Or more likely, two games. From Software’s new game (Shadows Die Twice??)We don’t know much about the new game from the studio that brought us Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but we can at least be confident that it will be incredibly challenging and incredibly fun. Given the teaser from December, it looks like it could be similar in setting to Bloodborne, maybe even a sequel. Or it could be a new series called Shadows Die Twice. Hopefully we learn more about this mystery soon.
Kellen later added his thoughts on Hideo Kojima's upcoming, long-teased game, Death Stranding.
Death Strandinglooks absolutely insane. After a few trailers over the past couple of years, hopefully the world will get a deeper look inside the otherworldly game from famed developer Hideo Kojima. This game appears to have everything and then some, but we still don’t know anything about the story. Gives us something to make sense of this madness.

I think I’ve been waiting for a game like The Last of Us Part IIall my life. I know for a fact I’ve been waiting for it since 2014, when the first article I ever published on video games predicted that the “dadification” of games (which peaked in 2013 with Telltale’s The Walking Dead, BioShock Infinite, and The Last of Us) would lead to a much more revolutionary shift: The daughterfication of games, when women and girl sidekicks would rise up to become protagonists of AAA adventures in their own right. In the years since, only Naughty Dog truly made good on the promise I imagined. The Ellie-centric Left BehindDLC still stands out in my memory as one of the most impactful experiences I’ve ever had in games, specifically because it gave a story about girlhood the same care and reverence as a story about a conventional video game protagonist like Joel. Some have questioned whether or not a follow-up to The Last of Us— which left off on an infamously ambiguous note — is warranted. But to me, the series would not do right by Ellie as a character until it gave her a follow-up where she didn’t have to share the role of protagonist. Because, like Joel in that final exchange, The Last of Usdid not fully respect Ellie’s agency. It made great strides, but robbed her of playability to serve Joel’s story instead. Now, she deserves to tell her own story, and make her own choices. Because both Joel and video games as a medium need to reckon with the consequences of taking agency away from women and girls in games. And let the daughterfication of games come full circle.
As for me, I'm a simple man of simple tastes.
I hope (and assume) Nintendo shows us Metroid Prime 4. It was exciting to see that logo teaser last year, but now it's time to get serious and give us the goods. We haven't seen a proper new Metroid in a long time -- NO, Other Mdoesn't count, nor does Federation Force. It'll be great to get back to the Prime timeline of Metroid stories.
Square's unexpected entry into the press conference gauntlet -- the publisher hasn't hosted one since 2015 -- gives me hope that we'll get a first glimpse of what's happening with Marvel. We know there are two big-budget games in development; one is said to be an Avengers game, and rumors point to the other being a Guardians of the Galaxy game. They won't be out this year, but I'll be content just to see them.
My biggest E3 hope -- and this is true every year -- is that something genuinely surprises me. Plenty of leaks and rumors give us the goods on announcements before they happen. I want to be bowled over. I want something to come completely out of left field and leave me speechless.
That's what makes E3 an event to tune in for, at least for me. Even now, when it feels like the answer to any and all questions can be found with the right Google search, E3 still manages to sneak in surprises on a yearly basis. I'm here for that.
